Falls Water serves about 3,600 residential and commercial customers north of Ammon and northeast of Idaho Falls. The company wants to increase its fixed rate for metered customers from $14 to $18 per month, but proposes to decrease the portion of rates based on the amount of water used. That rate, the commodity rate, would decrease from 66.7 cents per 1,000 gallons used to 60 cents. Falls Water estimates that the increase in the fixed rate and the decrease in the commodity charge combined will result in an average 14.9 percent increase for residential customers, an 8.5 percent increase for customers living in multi-family units and a 4.2 percent increase for business customers. The last time rates were adjusted was in January 2008. Since then, the company says it has put in a new well, installed meters as well as devices that allow the company to more accurately read meters without having to physically enter the site. Falls Water says it has also replaced a hydrant, moved offices and acquired new office furniture. The workshop will begin at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 8, in the Hartwell Room of the Colonial Arts Theater, 490 A St., Idaho Falls. During the workshop, commission staff will provide an overview of the company’s application and answer questions from customers. Representatives of the company may also be available.
