Please describe your question or comment briefly:
My husband and I are very concerned about the rate increase that Avista is requesting.
We feel they need the request to cover the expenses for the new meters that they felt they
needed to convert to and you approved them to install. Fortunately for the Washington
customers, their commission did not approve their request for the new meter. Avista is
having problems with them working correctly and are realizing that technology is not perfect
and also that the longevitiy of these meters is going to be much shorter than they thought.
Somehow they are going to have to come up with the money for this mistake and we feel they
are covering that with the request they have on the table now. At the moment, a lot of Idaho
customers are having trouble paying their bills and are using programs for assistance such as
project share and the amount of money in these programs is dwindling. With a 7% increase, it
will only increase the number of families needing assistance and the funds for assistance
will run dry. It is our understanding that the CEO and executives are giving themselves large
increases - should that be put on the customers by rate increases?
We urge you to look into the total picture and at least address the issues of the new
meters, how well they are working, and the longevity of them. Do not reward a company that
has made a costly error and are still increasing the executives salaries.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Doug and Barb Scoville
