BOISE (Nov. 22, 2023) – Veolia Water Idaho has applied to the Idaho Public Utilities Commission to transfer ownership of fire hydrants belonging to the Whitney Fire Protection District to Veolia. Veolia and Whitney each own fire hydrants within Veolia’s service area in the City of Boise and Ada County. Veolia said many fire hydrants owned by the fire district need maintenance, which is burdening the district’s fire protection responsibilities. Veolia is proposing to take ownership of the hydrants over a five-year period. Veolia and the fire district have reached an agreement that would include the conveyance of hydrants to Veolia. There are approximately 70 private hydrants in the Whitney Fire Protection District. If the commission approves the agreement, Veolia plans to begin billing the owners of those hydrants as allowed by commission-approved tariffs. Veolia also is seeking commission approval to install new fire hydrants in locations where existing hydrants are too distant from each other to comply with fire code. The commission can approve, deny or modify the application. The commission is accepting written comments on Veolia’s application until Jan. 18, 2024. Comments are required to be filed through the commission’s website or by e-mail unless computer access is not available. To submit written comments electronically, please visit puc.idaho.gov and click on the “Case Comment Form” link on the upper left side of the page.
