PUC staff to conduct workshop for Spirit Lake East water customers
Staff from the Idaho Public Utilities Commission will conduct an informational workshop for customers
of the Spirit Lake East Water Company on Tuesday night in Spirit Lake.
The purpose of the workshop is present information about the company’s March 5 application for a rate
increase and to take customer questions and feedback. Representatives from the company may also be
on hand to answer questions. The workshop begins June 25 at 7 p.m. at the Spirit Lake Community
Center, 32564 N. Fourth Ave.
Spirit Lake East seeks to switch from a quarterly to a monthly billing system. The minimum fee for
residential customers would increase from $12.50 per month to $24.75 for the first 9,000 gallons of use.
The company also proposes to charge 12 cents for every 100 gallons above 9,000 gallons per month.
Spirit Lake East serves about 288 residential customers east of Spirit Lake. The company’s 2011 income
statement indicates $72,870 annual revenue against expenses of $114,830. The company is seeking
commission approval of an annual revenue requirement of $150,414, approximately 106 percent above
the current revenue requirement.
There has not been a significant increase for customers of the water system in 30 years, according to the
company’s application. The commission did approve an approximate 50-cent per month increase in
2007. According to the company’s application, it has completed upgrades and repairs to increase water
pressure, provide back-up power generation and improve leaks to the main line.
The company said monthly billing will allow the customers and the company to more quickly find and
repair leaks. Customers will also be able to better track their consumption and take conservation
measures if they choose.
The Idaho Public Utilities Commission has already received customer comments and will continue to
take public comment through July 31. A public hearing will likely be scheduled later.
Comments are accepted via e-mail by accessing the commission’s homepage at www.puc.idaho.gov and
