Rocky Mountain Power asks to decrease rates
BOISE, Idaho, November 14, 2016-Rocky Mountain Power has asked the Idaho Public
Utilities Commission to decrease customer rates $1.1 million, or approximately 0.4 percent,
applied equally across all customer classifications. The decrease results from a projected
reduction to the variable costs of providing electricity. For the average residential customer in
Idaho using approximately 800 kilowatt-hours per month, this will mean a decrease of
approximately $3.24 on their annual bill.
"When customer rates are set, they include the anticipated variable costs of electricity such as
fuel and wholesale power purchases," said Tim Solomon, Rocky Mountain Power customer and
community manager. "The company adjusted the level of the variable costs of providing
electricity in 2016 and parties to that case agreed that they should be updated again in 2017,
subject to review by the Idaho Public Utilities Commission. The proposed decrease would be
effective January 1, 2017, if approved.
"We are focused on controlling costs and maintaining our position as a low-cost energy
provider," Solomon said. "We recognize any changes in electric rates have an impact on our
customers and we continue to work hard to provide reliable electric service at reasonable
prices."
The public can comment on the proposal now as the commission studies the company's request.
The commission must approve the proposed changes before they can take effect. A copy of the
company's application is available for public review at the commission offices in Boise or on it's
homepage at www.puc.idaho.gov and at the company's offices in Rexburg, Preston, Shelley and
