Weather forces cancellation of workshops

Existing and forecasted weather conditions have resulted in the Idaho Public Utilities Commission cancelling planned workshops in eastern Idaho this week regarding PacifiCorp’s application for an average 4 percent rate increase.

The workshops were scheduled for Wednesday night in Rexburg and Thursday night in Preston. “We find that the road conditions and snow may compromise the safety of staff traveling to the workshops and of customers attending the workshops,” the commission said. Conditions may improve before the workshops, but notice requirements force the commission to make a decision at least 24 hours in advance of the workshops.

Customers who planned on attending the workshops may still contact the commission to ask questions by calling toll-free 1-800-432-0369. Comments or questions can also be e-mailed to the commission’s Web site at

PacifiCorp, which serves 70,000 eastern Idaho customers under the name Rocky Mountain Power, proposes to increase base rates by $5.9 million annually or 4 percent.

The size of the increase varies according to customer class. PacifiCorp proposes a 4.73 percent for residential customers, 7.96 percent for large commercial customers, 2.3 percent for irrigation customers and no increase for small commercial or public street lighting customers. For the residential customer who uses the company average of 850 kilowatt-hours per month, the monthly increase would be $3.55 per month if the increase were granted in full.

The utility claims the increase is needed to pay for load growth, capital investment and operating costs beyond the company’s control.

By Jan. 30, commission staff will file its comments along with other intervenors in the case including Agrium, the Community Action Partnership Association of Idaho, the Idaho Irrigation Pumpers Association and Monsanto.
