First Idaho Power tried to renege on their agreement with residential customers
who use net metering, and now they are going after the farmers. Farmers
should have the right to power their irrigation pumps with home-grown solar
energy, and the PUC and Idaho Power should be encouraging them to do so.
Idaho Power should eliminate the arbitrary 100-kW cap on solar meters so that
farmers and businesses have the freedom to invest in a solar system that is large
enough to meet their energy needs. Before ending the current program, Idaho
Power should establish new and fair rates. In addition, the comment period
should be extended so that farmers will have an opportunity to prepare their
comments after harvest. I have a small electric pump that I use to irrigate one
acre in Owyhee County, and I was hoping to install a solar panel to replace the
pump. The new proposal will likely prevent me from doing so. Converting to
solar is good for the economy and good for the planet. Don’t let Idaho Power
stand in the way.
