Comment:I support Avista's rate hike request only if the utility has clear and current plans to move forward towardcleanrenewableenergyandawayfromtheircurrentdependenceoncoal-one of the most costly fossil fuels both to theenvironmentandtoourpockets,as evidenced by Avista's frequent rate hike requests.
As an Idaho resident and consumer,after suffering the fires and smoke this summer and witnessing the strength anddevastationofrecordbreakinghurricanesinTexas,Florida and Puerto Rico I can't sit by and watch my utility continue topourmillionsofmetrictonsofcarbondioxideintotheatmospherecausingfurtherglobalwarming.
Avista has got to step up to the plate and earn citizen and customer support by doing the right thing and put theenhancedfinancialremunerationthatyoumaygrantthemtogooduse-transitioning now from costly coal to cleanerenergy.
Colstrip is one of the largest producers of greenhouse gas in the US.This is why Puget sound energy,Portland GeneralElectricandPacificorp(our co-owners of Colstrip)are all planning early exit strategies from coal and Colstrip which willleaveus(Avista)holding the bag and future financial obligation to say nothing of the moral responsibility we bear asAvistacustomersasitbecomesthemajorownerofacoalplantresponsibleforpollutionandhugegreenhousegasproduction.
Avista needs resources and support but that support should be earned by Avista doing the right thing--theirexitstrategyfromcoalneedstobeonthetable.
