Yet again we are in the midst of another rate increase request by Avista,despite the fact
that the utility ended 2014 with strong earnings and a healthy balance sheet.Let’s also not
forget that the company is asking for its eighth rate increase in 8 years.Not surprisingly,
management continues to state that these increases are driven by millions of dollars of
required infrastructure upgrades.A good excuse if you’re talking to a credulous audience.
Surprisingly,the Washington state Attorney General’s Office of Public Counsel has actually
come out and recommended a rate decrease (in reference to Avista’s electric rate request in
Washington).Sadly though,I have lost faith in Idaho’s PUC to finally render a decision in
favor of its ratepayers and follow Washington’s lead.
