In the current economy, many hardworking families are barely able to make ends meet. This new proposal to increase not only electric rates but even the basic monthly charge for residential electric services will certainly further strain the already tight budget each family has had to adhere to in these very difficult economic times. It is interesting that so many other institutions are recognizing and sympathizing with the financial situation the average citizen currently finds him/herself in. Rather than further stressing the pocketbooks of their fellow Idahoans, these companies are looking at ways to stay in business while still being able to provide a service to the patrons they have accumulated over the years. Some businesses are even putting into place a modest cut in the salaries of their staff and administrators to accommodate for the restrictions put in place by this economy. Many companies are also trying to look closely at ways to spend less and save more so that they are able to keep costs low for their customers while keeping the doors of their businesses open. Rather than putting the weI fare of the honest, hardworking, and respectable families of this area in jeopardy, perhaps some similar cuts could be made in staffing, salaries, and expenditures at Avista so as to limit the negative impact that such a rate increase would surely have on the average Idaho household. I hope that Avista and the Commission will seriously consider this option prior to approving any request that will have such an obviously detrimental effect on the good people of this state. I urge the Idaho PUC to protect consumers from price gouging from this monopoly. By the way, I read your response to our numerous complaints about executive pay. I respectfully disagree - the whole argument that multi-million $ salary & bonus incentives are required to retain good employees is ridiculous. Should people suffer in freezing temperatures next winter so a bunch of · executi ves i can keep their unreasonable compensation? 850 families could have a whole year' s electric/gas service for one executive i s $1 million bonus. They have requested a 14.6% increase in residential service and a 13.3% increase in the General Service charge. This rate request comes after Avista has made huge investment profits for executives. I find it totally unreasonable and unacceptable for this company to continue requesting increases on the consumer when they have such huge profits. Their request comes during tough economic times in the State of Idaho. I don i t usually voice out complaints, but Avista i s charges are out of control. They seem to be able to do anything they want. I would hope that the Idaho Utilities Commission would put a stop to their fleecing of the residential customers in the State of Idaho. The State Attorney General of Washington has already denied a number of rate increases to this greedy utility company. I believe it is time for the State of Idaho to say that enough is enough.
