Preparer/Sponsoring Witness: Greg Wyatt
REQUEST NO.6:
In reference to managing your water system more effciently, please provide all available
information on the lost and unaccounted-for-water in your system and how you are managing the
system to minimize these losses.
RESPONSE NO.6
Attached is the August 201 1 Unaccounted-for- Water (UFW) Report for United Water Idaho.
The report is calculated monthly and the UFW amount and percent is based on a 12-month
rollng basis of the data. The report shows the UFW percentage to be 3.97% at August 2011.
United Water Idaho manages its system to minimize water losses in the following ways:
. Magnetic flow meters are installed at sources of supply and are calibrated on a regular
basis in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations or better.
. Source of supply production data obtained via SCADA is also verified via manual
readings of source of supply meters monthly.
. Virtually all customer meters are located in outside meter pits/vaults ensurng access to
meters for readings and minimizing estimated reads.
. Customer meter reading is also closely managed to ensure routes are read and biled on
schedule.
. The Company has an ongoing customer meter change program and all customer meters
are within 15 years of age.
. Water use at the Company's facilties (plants, office) and in the distribution system
(flushing) are measured or estimated to account for those uses.
. System water use by others (fire deparment, street sweepers) are measured or estimated
to account for those uses.
. The Company issues hydrant meters to contractors for "construction" water use, bils for
those uses, and accounts for the water used.
. The Company has had and continues a main replacement program that targets older,
small, metallc mains for replacement.
