Gem State Water Company, LLC Application for an Order Authorizing an Increase in its
Rates and Charges for Water Service
Data Request Response
Request No.: GSW-W-22-01 IPUC DR 63
63. Please describe the typical work that would be required to install a new water
service connection in the Company's service area. For example, would a
new connection require a hot tap, service piping, curb stop, pit setter and meter? If any
of the Company's water systems have some of the service infrastructure already
installed, such as a tap, service piping, and curb stop, please provide a list summarizing
the infrastructure status for each system.
Response:
A typical meter installation requires 4’ minimum excavation from the customer’s utility
easement to the water main for freeze protection. A hot tap on the water main needs to
be performed using a saddle, corporation stop, and tapping machine. From the
corporation stop, an HDPE service line would run the distance to the meter set location.
Prior to the installation of the meter set, a curb stop and box would be installed. If
available, the Company would then install a coil box pit setter after the curb stop. The
coil box setter allows for maintenance above ground and does not require separate
boxes. If the coil setter is unavailable, the Company will install a brass pit setter, a base
meter box, 2 middle sections, and a top box with steel meter door. On the customer side
of the meter set, the Company provides a 3’ galvanized stub with cap for the customer
connection. In some cases, the new meter set may require a road crossing as well as a
pavement patch and permitting by the highway department.
The Company does not currently have any service areas that have preexisting
infrastructure installed consisting of a tap, service piping, or curb stops. All service
areas require a full meter set installation as described above.
