FIELD VISIT NOVEMBER 30 THROUGH DECEMBER 1, 2021 NOTES
Kettle Falls Generating Station
2 units, 1 wood‐fired unit in service in 1983, combustion, 1 GE steam turbine and generator 53 mw, and
8 mw gas turbine
Joining EIM, planning on deocoupling units completely to be simple cycle – would leave assets in place in
case they decide to return to combined cycle
Still baseload on wood burning unit
Normal outage schedule – complete outage, every 7 years do a turbine outage
CT outage schedule is hours based
Seeing constraints on gas control – might need $40 million to upgrade gas
Fuel yard replacement project underway, new scales, truck dumpers, processing building – comes online
next year
Just replaced economizer – retube a couple years ago
Controls upgrade on combustion turbine, marks 3 controls on stem system replaced
Replaced mechanical connector – full replacement
New well meter system, replaced denumeralized system
New IRP looking for resources, submitting a bid to increase capacity by 10 mw – would need major
upgrades and a repower – looking at second wood burning unit – can increase truck deliveries by 25%
with the new storage yard
Strict regulations on he wood they burn – don’t allow foreign materials on the wood like glue, paint, etc.
– helps keep the equipment clean and running efficient
Little Falls Hydro Facility
4 units, 45 mw total, around 11‐12 per unit, 1 penstock for each unit
Originally built 1906, all 4 units upgraded in last 4 years, added a few more mws
Not regulated by FERC, regulated by dam safety commission
Upgraded exciters, lube oil system, new governor system, new wicket gates
Havent upgraded headgates recently
Planning on putting in new crane pad and replacing headgates, intake racks withing 5‐6 years for
engineering
All units based on water transfer from Long Lake – run based on where the water is coming in
Different run patterns based on season – more precipitation leads to more run time so no spilling

Upgrade on controls withing last couple years
Can operate Little Falls from Long Lake, but not vice versa
Long Lake Hydro Generation Facility
4 units, total mw of 84
Units have been pretty much the same since 1915, not upgraded like Little Falls – going through similar
processes to upgrade at Little Falls
Don’t expect to need more mws after upgrade due to licensing agreements and restrictions
Will replace GSU to units when doing upgrades
Want to move switchgear equipment from inside to outside
Nine Mile Hydro Production Plant
4 units, 36 mw capacity, but 29 is the most they have ever gotten
Originally built in 1907
Major upgrades to units – 1 and 2 replaced awhile ago and 3 and 4 were upgraded recently
Headgates are now steel, but basically the same headgates
Governors added to units 1 and 2
No governor system for units 3 or 4
Only max capacity at certain times of year, capacity gain would not be important since they are
restrained by the time of the year
