TITLE: W-1730 SM2-311 GEARBOX REPLACEMENT

OBJECTIVE: Remove and replace the gearbox and main shaft assembly in wind turbine SM2-311 located at Seven Mile wind plant.

1. Introduction
This project is to remove and replace the damaged gearbox and main shaft assembly in wind turbine SM2-311 located at Seven Mile wind plant. We will replace the damaged gearbox and main shaft assembly with a new refurbished capital spare gearbox and main shaft assembly from our inventory. This project requires a large erection crane with a smaller tail crane to remove the rotor assembly and the gearbox and main shaft assembly. The new capital spare gearbox and main shaft and rotor assemblies will be installed with all new mounting hardware and oil as required. The damaged gearbox has been identified to contain severe intermediate gear and pinion shaft teeth. This turbine has been placed out-of-service until the replacement can be made due to the severity of the damage found. The scheduled replacement project requires extended contractor labor and equipment costs due to the wind restrictions and weather conditions. The total estimated capital expenditure for this project is $213,098.

2. Description and Strategic Fit
The wind energy plants at PacifiCorp are an integral component to the generation portfolio. Management of the operations and maintenance functions of the wind generation plants is critical to protecting our assets and providing a reliable generation resource. This project is considered a requirement as the wind turbine generator has been placed out-of-service until the replacement can be completed.

3. Capital Budget Status
Funding for this project will come from the approved 2013 capital budget. This will be a G2 APR under the approved G1 APR 10009911.

4. Benefits
The gearbox must be replaced before further damage occurs. Replacement of the damaged gearbox/main shaft assembly will prevent the further loss of revenue, production tax credits and lost green tags for wind turbine generators. The benefits of doing the project now rather than later include a positive PVRR(d) benefit of $16K and a project IRR of 10.7%.

5. Alternatives Considered
The alternative considered was to operate the wind turbine generator until the gearbox/main shaft assembly has a catastrophic failure, this will place no salvageable return on the gearbox/ main shaft assembly investment. Another alternative would be to not replace the damaged gearbox and main shaft assembly which would keep this turbine inoperable.

6. Risk Factors Evaluated
Risk factors involved with this project are moderate to high as wind speed restrictions and blade icing conditions for the removal and installation operations may affect this project’s final completion date.

7. Retirement and Removal Information
This project will remove the gearbox and main shaft assembly on SM2-311. This gearbox and main shaft assembly will be sent to a repair facility to be evaluated for refurbishment. A rebuilt capital spare gearbox and main shaft assembly will be installed to restore operation of this wind turbine.
