Electric reliability is important to
every customer we have, and with a
wintertime economy reliant on the ski
industry,we knowthat the quality and
reliability of electricity in the Wood River
Valley becomes more crucial everyyear.
The southern half ofthe Wood River
Valley, from Hailey south,is served by two
power lines,giving them multiple power
sources during most ofthe year.However
the northern part of the Wood River
Valley is served by a single power line,
which has been sufficient in the past.
But one risk involved in having a single
line scenario is that if it goes out of
service, there is no other way to get power
to Ketchum.
As the population increases along the
Highway 75 corridor,it is becoming
increasingly important to address the
future need for additional power and to
maintain electric reliability.

Reliability
Electric demand has grown in the past
decade as the number ofhomes and
businesses have increased.
•Idaho Power wants to help support the
continued economic prosperity ofthe
valley by providing a reliable electric
supply,and a long-term plan is necessary
to ensure the facilities and supply are
there when they're needed.
•Unlike many communities in our service
area,Blaine Countyhas a winter peak—
which is also coincident with the peak of
economic activity.Skiing and winter
activities draw in manyvisitors.But storm
damage to the Idaho Power system also is
highest in winter—a precarious situation
and potential threat to customers there.
•In the near future Idaho Power will need
to add new electrical facilities specifically
to meet Wood River Valley growth and
reliability needs.Options and ideas for
addressing this growth could include one
or a combination ofthe following:a high-
voltage transmission line to the valley
from the south;an additional high
voltage-transmission line from Hailey to
Ketchum/Sun Valley;a cluster of small
distribution substations and lines;or
managing or reducing the demand for
electricity.
•As regional infrastructure improvements
are planned,Idaho Power wants to be
involved early in order to plan necessary
capacity additions like power lines.It
takes years to plan and implement
changes to electrical utility systems.
Electric demand in the Ketchum-Sun
Valley area has grown from 47 MW in
1996 to 57 MW in 2006.
Electric demand in the Wood River Valley
has grown from 100 MW in 1996 to 120
MW in 2006.
At its ultimatebuild out,thevalley electric
demand will be double what it is today.
•For comprehensive planningpurposes,
Idaho Power's transmission and
distribution lines should be considered
essential transportation components.We
don't transport people but we do transport
energy,and they often followthe same
route.As major transportation corridors
are defined and developed,Idaho Power
wants to be involved in the process and
establish the complementary use ofthese
corridors for energy transportation.
•Idaho Power wishes to engage stakeholders
in planning the future energy supply to the
Wood River Valley. We are forming an
advisory committee made up of:
?Regional transportation planners
?Various city and county planners
?Representatives from city councils and
county commissions
?Advocacy and special interest groups
?Valley business leaders
?Residents
