BOISE (Aug. 29, 2024)—The Idaho Public Utilities Commission has approved an application from Idaho Power that will allow it to buy electricity from Powerex Corp. In its application to the commission, Idaho Power said a proposed market purchase agreement will allow it to buy 200 megawatts of firm capacity from June through September between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m., seven days a week. Firm capacity is a guarantee of a level of supplied power committed to by Powerex as long as the purchase agreement is active. The utility said its system would require approximately 236 megawatts of additional capacity by 2026 to meet system reliability requirements, and that the market purchase agreement will begin on June 1, 2026. The agreement has a five-year term that begins when the Boardman to Hemingway transmission line project starts to transmit power, and the agreement allows for a bridge term to buy and receive the power in the event that the Boardman to Hemingway line is not in service as of June 1, 2026. The commission determined the market purchase agreement is fair, just and reasonable. Additional information on Idaho Power's application is available at: puc.idaho.gov/case/Details/7287.
