My personal preference would be for a split, since area code 208 covers a relatively largearea(in this case,an entire state),serves many communities of interest, and has a relatively lowpopulationdensitycomparedtothoseofmajorcitiesacrossthecountry, which would mean thatmanypeopleareaccustomedonlytoseven-digit dialing and use seven digits only for (mostlylocal)business. With the split option,I recommend that the southemlwestern section (Area B)retain area code 20$while the northern/eastern section (Area A)change to the new area code, since Area B has a greater population and more phone users than Area A. Furthermore,I recommend monitoring the projected exhaust date closely and,if it movesoutsignificantly, delaying and/or dismissing the relief plan if necessary. I and others Ive asked, usually decide whether to answer a call after checking the caller ID number. And I often choose purchases based on the proximity of the supplier, which I may determine from the area code. I’m fine with changing my personal and business area code as long as it is specific to my local calling area. And I appreciate not having to dial my own area code for most calls. For people whose phone service charges for out of area calls, the geographic spit method is especially important. What a hassle it would be to dial a 10 digit number for local calling or for my nearby friend/neighbor having to determining what area code they are in. Like zip codes, geographic area codes work well because they are logical applications of location. An area code “overlay”fosters confusion and frustration. It would seem best to keep the 208 area code for the Treasure valley metropolitan area where the largest number of residential, commercial and state government phone numbers are concentrated.
