Due to customers like us who have strived to conserve water we are being punished for doing so. For United Water to ask for a 20% rate increase is a slap in the face to its' customers. They state due to the significant decline in water usage they have significantly lower revenues. What about my significantly lower revenues in this economy? Why do we need to tighten our belts and they don't? It's not the customers fault they spent too much money. When I contacted United Water Idaho I was told that the reason for the seasonal increase was to encourage water conservation. Now that the water consumption per metered customer is declining the water company is requesting an increase in rates. It does not make any sense to grant this increase. Apparently United Water Idaho has done a poor job managing their money and poorly prioritizing their projects. If the water company drops their seasonally adjusted billing increase than they may possibly deserve a small increase. Otherwise~ there should be no increase and they should manage their company with the funds on hand. The cost of new equipment and systems should have been anticipated -there is no indication there were any emergency scenarios that required these expenditures. This is a cost of doing business and should have been anticipated and it is not an acceptable reason for a rate increase. A reduction in water usage causing a reduction in revenue - what a surprise. They asked for it and they got it - Plan for it and reduce your expenses to accomodate the reduced revenue. This cannot be an acceptable basis for the requested rate increase. i fully expect that a thorough review of the information provided as the basis for this rate increase will lead the members of the IPUC to reject this request. The profi tabily of United Water and its parent company must be reflective of good business practices and well planned capital investments - it is not the exclusive duty of the 'rate payers' to carry the entire load through rate increases.
