Re: Eagle Water Company sale to Suez
I have lived in Eagle Hills since L982. Through all these years Eagle
Water Company has provided satisfactory and reliable water service to
our home at a very competitive cost.
Now I see where Suez is purchasing Eagle water and indications are
that our water rates will rise significantly over a period of several years.
The story from Suez is that Eagle Water infrastructure is in terrible
shape and they will have to invest big money to bring the system up to
date because of deferred maintenance has let the system deteriorate. I
believe this is a lot of malarkey. My water service is just fine. My
attitude is if it isn't broken then don't fix it. Sure, maintenance is
required and lines break and pumps fail but I have trouble believing the
"need to fix" in any way justifies the predicted rise in rates. I believe
the rise in rates is because Eagle Water Company ran lean and mean
with Iow overhead and no executives pulling down 6 figure incomes.
Suez is a big company with lots of overhead some of which will be
allocated to the customers of Eagle Water Company. I resent that I may
end up feeding the giant while receiving no tangible benefits.
Even more distressing to me than the prospect of increased rates is the
fact that Suez not an American company. I am very opposed to foreign
companies buying up American utilities. I wish our state legislature
would pass legislation limiting the sale of utilities to foreign owners.
Lacking this legislation, however, it is you folks at PUC who control this
issue through rate setting and approvals. !t is my request that you
disapprove the Suez purchase of Eagle Water and if Suez does buy lt
then set our rates at a level that will force them to run lean and mean
and keep rates low as Eagle Water Company has done for the nearly 40
years they have provided me with reliable water service.
Sincerely,
ohn P. Myers

Comment: "Commissioners: It is becoming increasingly clear that water will be one of the most important commodities both locally and worldwide in the very near future. It seems
foolhardy to even consider selling our local water to a company that is not even US owned, much less locally owned. I realize that our water supply will be increasingly expensive no
matter who owns it, but I am imploring you not to cede our local water rights to this non-local company (which has a terrible reputation locally and nationwide). I strongly oppose this
acquisition. Sincerely, Laura Jakious "
