Spirit Lake East Water Company (Hanson Industries) has owned/operated the water system in
SLE for approximately 30 years. During this time no improvements have been made to this
system until the recent orderings by DEQ. This has resulted in 250+ homes being put into
a situation that is unsafe and unsatisfactory according to DEQ standards, i. e, low or nowater pressure, unsanitary water following disruption of service, failure to notify in a
timely manner a boil order. In addition, the back up system which was ordered by DEQ to
be installed, during our most recent service disruption was not up to capacity to handle
the situation; the resevoir was not filled in order to provide water to the homes. The
back up system is battery powered which is unable to power the well pump to continue to
fill the reservoir. The homes in SLE were without power for at least 36+ hours. The town
of Spirit Lake was asked to assist during this time but the water company (Hanson
Industries) was told that the city could not continue to help them out but they needed toaddress the issues themselves. To date no updates or changes have been made in order to
prevent this reoccurrence.
